What's up with coffee?

I just can't seem to jump on the coffee bandwagon. And tea? Meh, it doesn't really float my boat either. But chocolate - now we're talking. That's my jam. However, this whole obsession with coffee is something that puzzles me.

You've heard it before, right? "I can't even function without my morning coffee." It makes me wonder, why do we choose to make our lives more complicated by depending on a beverage? It’s not like coffee is as essential as breathing.

It almost feels like being part of the coffee club is more of a societal thing, or maybe it's just trendy. Is grabbing a coffee the modern-day equivalent of wearing a power balance?

Take a walk in any of Jakarta's busy business areas, and you'll see what I mean. It's like a parade of people flaunting their coffee cups and tumblers as if they're fashion accessories. I think there are more than 1,000 coffee shops in Jakarta alone.

Could it be that sipping on coffee is seen as a sign of sophistication? What's the magic in coffee that has everyone hooked?
